A preview of Julie and Ari's wedding flowers

We have designed a very organic look for Julie and Ari’s Sunday wedding and thought we would share it with you before the big day this weekend!

The bride LOVES moss so we decided to incorporate it in everything, she also loves green with a small pop of color.
Our work is usually created in clear glass vases, but not for this one, we had to bring more warmth and more of a natural feel to the designs. We chose to go with a more traditional clay pot which we will wrap in an accordeon leaf for a more organic look. Curly willow branches and lots of salal leaves will also join the party.

We can’t wait to see the final product, stay posted for the pictures!

Exotic Jade Vine

Jade Vine rainforest turquoise flower

Jade Vine

The clawlike flower, jade vine is a rare tropical plant that grow in rainforests. This endangered specie is originally from the Philippines. In reflection of its name the flower colors vary from sea green to turquoise color. The jade vine is found near damp forest areas along the streams. It can grow up to 18 meters long and its leaflets can grow up to 25 cm long.

This flower is stunning and the color is very refreshing. It is a shame that the jade vine has become rare this is unfortunate, and caused by the shortage of rainforests. I would love to go to the Philippines and see this beauty!

Why The Red Rose for Valentine ?

Red Roses For Valentine, by Oxide Design Montral Flowers , Florists

Why Red Roses For Valentine?

On Valentine’s Day, what else to talk about in the flower world than red roses! The flower of love! Here is a little history:

Evidence suggests that the red rose is nearly 35 million years old. The most commonly available roses belong to two broad categories:

  • the Oriental species and their hybrids,
  • the European or Mediterranean species and their hybrids.

It is possible to grow a red rose anywhere in the world, if the species to which it belongs is selected according to climatic conditions.

Not surprisingly, therefore, ancient civilizations such as those of the Egyptians, the Greeks and the Romans seemed to have given the red rose a place of pride.
Rose fossils have been found near ancient Egyptian tombs. Greek mythology is replete with references to the red rose being sacred to Bacchus, the Greek god of wine, and Venus, the Greek goddess of love. Cupid, of course, is inextricably linked to the red rose.

  • The Romans seem to have been rather preoccupied with the red rose. Their preoccupation was not just the result of their appreciation for its beauty and fragrance. They had discovered the medicinal properties of the red rose, and also found ways of capturing its fragrance in perfumes. In fact, there is evidence which suggests that they experimented with cultivation techniques and found ways to make red roses blossom beyond their natural peripheries.
  • The beauty of the red rose has always driven rose lovers to find ways and means of collecting them, displaying them and growing them. French Empress Josephine, particularly after her divorce with Emperor Napoleon, took to roses and dedicated a large space and resources to the cultivation and hybridization of roses. The palace of Malmaison became home to rose gardens with old and new species. Among these, the red rose received plenty of attention.
  • The red rose also has an interesting place in the history of England. Opposing factions in York and Lancaster fought for control over England in the 15th century. York was synonymous with the white rose and Lancaster with the red rose. In fact, the friction between these warring factions led to the coining of the term ‘War of the Roses’. Lancaster emerged victorious, but this victory did not spell defeat for York. Tudor Henry VII and his bride from York facilitated the symbolic union of red rose and the white rose, and gave England ‘the Rose of England’.
  • Whether it’s red roses in England, or in any other part of the world, botanists credit China with the ‘ever-blooming’ variety. In the late 18th century, botanists succeeded in bringing these to Europe, and then the rest of the world. Today, including hybrids, there are over 150 species of roses. Several of these are red. There are different shades of red roses available today, and they are of different sizes.

Much love to our readers, happy Valentine’s Day!

Dan Yeffet's vases

I would like to introduce you to Dan Yeffet a talented modern furniture designer. His limited collection caught my eye! He features space, furniture and lighting accessories accessories for homes and offices. Dan is the man behind JellyLab design studio currently located in Paris. He is an artist that “puts a piece of himself into every work he does.” He considers himself to be a explorer and adventurer and I find his designs exemplify that.

His uniquely designed vases sharpen the character of a room. I would display these pieces as unqiue stand alone decoration or as a centerpiece with flowers. Yeffet’s talent brings decor to another level. Express yourself, would you decorate your place with Yeffet’s designs?

A Green Month at O.xide Design!

Green month at O.xide, Montreal Flowers and Florists

Green month at O.xide

We are seeing Green this month at O.xide Design! Requests from clients are definitely in that color scheme, now is it for an environmental view or is it simply because we can’t wait for spring? No matter what it is we love it!

Working with greeneries such as accordion, salal or even anthurium leaves is a great subtle way to give volume to an arrangement, throwing tones of green dendrobium orchids is also awesome. Impact is what we want and it is what we will get with this very green arrangement.

Again a proof that simplicity works best, one color scheme with a lot of power!

White Roses Arrangement

white roses arrangement

The simplicity of white roses is quite pure and beautiful!

In these arrangements, the rose is really showcased as the main star and is joined by a bit of pittosporum leaves and brown bamboo stick to add style and a bit of volume. Having a green leaf inside the vase also helps to complete this simple yet elegant look.

Using a single type of flower always has such a great impact!

Flower Arrangement in the Orange Tones

orangy flower arrangement by Oxide Design Montreal Florists

orangy flower arrangement

Had an arrangement in the orange tones to create last week, here is what we came up with:

We hadn’t used orange pincushion flowers in so long, so I was very excited to buy them for Gen to use! As for the orange mokara orchids, they are regulars at the atelier! We love working with them! Mix in some birch troncs with and without green moss, small monstera leaves, accordeon leaves and salal leaves and the recipe is done!

Another creation that was whipped up in no time and that looks stunning.
