Sketches of a Wedding Centerpiece

A sketch for an August wedding by Oxide Design, Montreal Florists

A sketch for an August wedding

I created this design for a centerpiece a couple weeks ago for clients who are getting married in august.

The wedding taking place at the Montreal’s W Hotel, the design had to work with the hotel’s color and style.
I simply love what the result of this sketch!
A piece of glass separating a ball of eggplant mini-carnations and a tall cylinder clear vase with black river rocks at the bottom and fushia dendrobium orchids inside. We also added some chrome chandeliers around the vase to create more impact.

I am so excited about this one, but we’ll have to wait a little while …

Carnations : Flower of the month of January

Carnation Flower Balls

Carnation Flower Balls

We don’t use carnations very often, however as you can see on these pictures, arranged as balls they look awesome! Here are a few fun and interesting facts about this birth flower of January.

The Carnation, whose botanic name is Dianthus caryophyllus, is really a plant that originated in the Near East at least 2000 years ago. It was originally only found in the popular light pink color, however today it has been cultivated into many other colors including red, purple, green and yellow.

Because of their low cost, carnations are the flower given most often in a boutonniere or in a corsage for a teenager’s high school prom, homecoming or other dance. They are also given to mothers on Mother’s Day, this allows for the children to have big assortments without breaking their budget.

Each color of a Carnation has a different meaning.

  • Light red symbolizes admiration
  • Dark red symbolizes a deep love
  • White symbolizes both pure love and luck
  • Striped Carnations symbolize regret.
  • Purple Carnations are said to indicate capriciousness.
  • Green Carnations are used predominantly on St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Pink Carnations are said to be a symbol of a mother’s undying love, going back to biblical times when Carnations sprang up out of the ground where the Virgin Mary’s tears fell as Jesus was carrying the cross.

The scarlet Carnation is the state flower of Ohio, chosen to honor assassinated president William McKinley, who was normally seen wearing it.

\Fun and interesting fact: At Oxford University, it is customary to wear a Carnation to an exam. White Carnations are worn to the first exam, red to the last, and pink Carnations to every exam in between.

Carnation balls

After showing you how to make carnation balls a couple of weeks ago, I thought it would be nice to show you how beautiful the final result can be.

I love how colorful, vibrant and attractive these wonderful and simple decorative balls are, and mostly (remember) so easy to make! Mixing and matching tints and sizes is the key to creating dynamic centerpieces and arrangements.

These flower arrangements look so fluffy, don’t you just feel like hugging one, I know I do!

DIY: Flower Balls

Gen doing a Flower Ball !

Gen doing a Flower Ball !

There is nothing more beautiful than a ball of fresh flowers! Now this isn’t a project for a very small budget, but we still thought we would share it with you since it is something fairely easy which can be done with so many different varieties of flowers.

What you’ll need:

  1. A ball of floral foam.
  2. A bunch of your favorite flowers (quantities depend on the size of the ball).
  3. Patience!

How to start:

  1. Make sure your ball of floral foam is well soaked with water.
  2. Cut all your flower heads to the same length (leave about 2 inches of stem).
  3. Start inserting the flowers in the floral foam, making sure to place these ones very close to each other.
  4. Be gentle, you wouldn’t want the floral foam to fall apart …

So easy! In this case we used pink carnations, which works very well for this project, as carnations are not expensive, and the texture is this flower works well to give a beautiful final results. Though, I would suggest to let your imagination run wild!
